TSAKOS tanker – MT PROTEAS – Rescue of Immigrants at Sea – off Libya

Whilst MT PROTEAS of Greek Flag, DWT 116.000 was en route from Sidi Kerir, Egypt to Augusta, Italy, in laden condition, Master, Capt Panagiotis Mellos, received Instructions from MRCC Rome to deviate to a position of about 60 miles off the Libyan port of Marsa Susa (Apollonia), NE of Benghazi, to pick up immigrants from a boat reported to be in distress.
The vessel arrived at the designated position at about 15:40 local time 27 August 2014 and picked up safely 221 people, including women and children. They are all reported in apparent good health, no injuries.
The Master and the 23 crew members are extending their fullest assistance and care to the persons rescued and have provided food and water and other necessities. No emergency medical assistance was necessary.
The vessel has now resumed her original route to Augusta where arriving 29 August 2014 early am.
The Master is keeping advised all competent authorities in Italy as well as the Greek Flag Administration.
Owners are in contact with Italian Authorities through the ship’s Agents at Augusta for the smooth disembarkation of the immigrants.
